Today I didn’t get to go into work. Maddux was off his game and I didn’t even get a second to myself to get ready or get him ready for daycare. I hate having to miss Field Day with my students, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Luckily, he did go down for a nap later in the morning, so he wasn’t stuck to my hip the entire day. Not that I hate playing momma Koala, but I do need a break or two! During his nap, I played around in the kitchen. After the morning we had, I really needed to just do something fun. Oh, and I needed to finally eat. We’ll get to my experiment in a minute. First, let’s talk about the products I used. 🙂
Through my partnership with FitFluential, I have had the opportunity to try and review a ton of awesome products. This time, it was Designer Whey protein powder, shakes, bars, and flavored drink mixes. *Disclosure: I was sent all of these items for free in exchange for an honest review on my part. I already use and love the powder, but I had never tried the other products.* I was really excited to test them all out!
The first product I tried was the protein powder. I’ve tried the French Vanilla before and liked it a lot. I immediately busted open the White Chocolate flavor. It’s really good! It’s sweet without being overwhelming, and the white chocolate flavor comes through nicely. I’ve used the powders in a few shakes, but my favorite way to use Designer Whey is in baking. I’ve made protein cheesecakes several times with it, but today I ventured out and made crepes. I’ll get to those at the end of the post. 😉 Overall, I’m really pleased with the powders.
Why I’d buy them again: great taste, perfect for baking, 100 calories and 18 grams of protein per serving, sweetened with Stevia, and no funky aftertaste.
In my shipment, I received two premixed protein shakes, one Gourmet Chocolate and one French Vanilla. I have to be honest, these were not my favorite products in the box. Then again, I don’t like most premixed protein shakes. I do have to say that they did not have that thick, chalky taste that some brands have. These were much more drinkable! I’m just not huge on any protein shakes, really. I have them occasionally, but I tend to prefer to make my own in those rare instances. I would definitely buy these in a pinch, though. They were the perfect solution to my mid-morning snack attacks at work.
Why I’d buy them again: no chalky texture, good flavor, and a great grab and go option.
These were my husband’s favorite products in the box. He had one of each flavor, so we both got to try them all! The three flavors we tried were Peanut Butter Crunch, Triple Chocolate Crunch, and Chocolate Caramel Crunch. Each bar has 10 grams of protein, has 170 calories or less, and tastes like a freaking candy bar. Stats wise, we both wished they had a slightly higher protein count. Other than that, they hit the flavor mark right on the money. They do have a decently high sugar (all around 14 grams), but I’m okay with that since I enjoy everything in moderation. My favorite flavor was the Peanut Butter Crunch. So good! They were also all crunchy, as promised. If you typically hate the texture of protein bars, you should check these out!
Why I’d buy them again: delicious, easy to pack, and decent stats.
I was also sent three boxes of protein drink mixes. I received three flavors: Lemonade, Mixed Berry, and Tropical Orange. This was the one product that I was most skeptical about. I despise protein powder mixed with water. Like, it gives me chills. This stuff is absolutely and totally in its own league flavor-wise. These Protein 2Go mixes are not your average protein powder. They really do taste as good as their non-protein packed counterparts. Texture-wise, they blend in perfectly to your water. I loved the fruit-flavored options, too! It’s a nice break from your typical chocolate or vanilla protein fix. My favorite flavor by far was the Mixed Berry. There was no “protein” flavor to it, which was amazing. I don’t even understand how they do it! I’m just glad they do.
Why I’d buy them again: awesome fruity flavors and no “protein” taste (during or after).
As you can see, my overall take on this brand is extremely positive. I think they have some great flavors, convenient products, and pretty good nutritional stats for most of the things I tried. (As with all commercial whey protein products, there are conflicting arguments on how often you should consume them. For me personally, I don’t use protein enough for any of those things to be of concern to me. I definitely have an “everything in moderation” take on all foods. I like protein powders and use them occasionally. They do not, however, make up the bulk of my diet.) I’ll continue to support and purchase products from this brand long after this initial “review” supply has dwindled. If you’re interested in trying some Designer Whey for yourself, they currently sell a Starter Kit, a 40 dollar value, for 20 bucks! Definitely worth a try, if you ask me.
If I haven’t convinced you yet, maybe my breakfast from this morning will. You only need a few ingredients and a few minutes. This protein-packed breakfast comes together in a flash. I’ll definitely be putting this one into the weekly rotation. 🙂
- 2 scoops White Chocolate Designer Whey Protein Powder
- 2 egg whites
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup cottage cheese
- handful of thawed frozen blueberries
- Blend cottage cheese, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and one scoop of protein powder until completely smooth. Set Aside.
- Heat lightly greased non-stick pan over medium heat.
- Whisk one scoop of protein powder into egg whites. Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Pour 1/3 of the crepe batter into the pan at a time. Flip crepes when the edges begin to brown and the middle bubbles slightly.

- Stuff each crepe with a third of the cottage cheese mixture. Top with thawed berries.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Hope you all are enjoying your Thursday! What is your favorite non-shake way to use protein powder?
