Oh, hey. Guess I took another break from the blog, huh?
Friday night, all hell broke loose in my house. We originally thought that Maddux was having a bad teething episode, so we tried the usual things. He would sleep for 10 to 15 minutes at a time then wake up screaming. It was awful. Around midnight, it got even worse. We couldn’t comfort him at all and he became totally inconsolable. Worst feeling ever as a parent. My throat starting hurting then, but I didn’t think much of it. I didn’t connect the dots that maybe we were dealing with something a little worse than teething. Friday night Ryne and I got around two hours of sleep. Seriously, that’s a generous estimate. It was bad.
It made running a 5k Saturday morning really interesting. I considered not going, but I mean, I was up anyway. I knew Ryne could handle things at the home front for an hour, the race was for a good cause, and it was also kind of a “work” thing. I thought I should go, ya know? Plus, I was lucky number 100. Sweet.
I ran it in 25 minutes. I’ve always been a 24-minute 5k runner. Always. I had really hoped I could pull off the elusive 23-minute race on Saturday, but I didn’t have the steam. Honestly, I feel like it could have gone a whole lot worse. I’m proud I got it done at all. 🙂 I don’t even know if this race counted, because I was definitely asleep the entire time. Kidding. I swear I always have excuses. I need to stop that. Mark my words, my next 5k will be a PR. For real, ya’ll.
When I got home, Maddux seemed to be feeling a little better. Thank you, Tylenol. We weren’t even going to take him to the doctor, but he started getting this weird rash all over the place. I told Ryne I thought it might be hand, food, and mouth disease. I didn’t even really know what that was, but I had run across the term before when I was frantically googling things back in the infant days.
After we watched an episode of Jake and the Neverland Pirates, the doctor confirmed my suspicions. Then he showed us the sores in Maddux’s mouth and throat. Y’all. I could have died. The doctor basically told us it would get worse before it got better. And that it would get better in 4 to 7 days. Geez.
He was right. It got a whole lot worse. Maddux wouldn’t eat or drink anything. He wouldn’t sleep. He wouldn’t sit still. I’m saying wouldn’t, but it’s probably more accurate to say that he couldn’t. The rest of Saturday and Saturday night was a big blur. I think I drove around my neighborhood at all hours of the night. For some reason, riding around comforted him.
Sunday morning, we all hopped in the car. We stopped at Starbucks and then just rode around. At least we had coffee, I guess.
We randomly got a pumpkin muffin while we were out and Maddux finally nibbled on something. He didn’t touch his milk, though. We spent the rest of the day squirting electrolytes down his throat so he wouldn’t get dehydrated. Poor kid. I know how bad it had to hurt, but he had to drink something!
I made muffins hoping he’d eat another one. Let’s just say, mine weren’t as good as the pumpkin cream cheese muffin he had earlier. Color me shocked.
He actually slept much better last night. I swear Starbucks makes miracle muffins. Today, I stayed home from work. He seems to be doing so much better. He’s eaten some pudding and drank a little bit of milk. We watched a movie with talking animals. Otherwise known as the best kind of movie.
Did I mention that I caught it from him? It sucks. I feel like a bigger baby about it than him. Definitely worse than any sore throat I’ve ever had before. Plus, it’s just kind of embarrassing to have a child’s disease. Like, I’m not an adult or something. Welcome to my life. On the plus side, I didn’t get the rash or face sores. So there’s that.
And that’s where I’ve been. What have you been up to? Hopefully your weekend also included muffins and coffee, but didn’t include medicine and tears. 🙂 We should be all better pretty soon, so maybe I won’t have to disappear again.
