What’s Next? + A Lifetime Of Fitness

Today we left school two hours early because of the so-called impending snow storm. At this point, there is still no sign of the fluffy stuff. Maybe after we go to bed? I’m really hoping we get a few inches overnight because I might be dying to see Maddux’s reaction to it. I remember the first time my dog saw snow, and I’m assuming it’s about the same response.

Tonight’s dinner was pretty much fate. Snow day + Teacher Appreciation Day Discount at our local pizza place? Twist my arm, why don’t ya?

pizza

Today was a rest day, so of course I used it to think about working out. Totally kidding. Well, I was kidding until now. Now I am actually thinking of my work out habits, future goals, and all that jazz. As usual, I started typing this post with no direction but a thought randomly just popped in my head. Well, a question actually.

“So, what’s next?”

I typically go from one goal to the next. Handstands? Got ‘em. Half marathon PR? Check. Build strength? Eh, we’re working on it. But you get my point. There is always a challenge. There is always some new thing to conquer. Right now I can’t think of anything I want or need to do when it comes to fitness. Sure, I still want to master pull ups. I want to run a faster 5k. I want to be Gisele Bundchen. You know, all the normal things people hope for in life. There will always be new things to learn, new speeds to reach, new muscles to grow. Honestly, though, right now I just don’t have one thing I’m dying to focus on. I’m happy with where I am.

I’ve realized that I just want a lifetime of fitness.

If my legs keep running, if my arms keep lifting things, if my heart keeps tickin’ properly, and if I’m body keeps playin’ with Maddux… well, then I’m good to go. Yep. That’s about it. Don’t worry, though. I’m still going to grow huge biceps one day. So, write that one down ’cause it’s happening. ;)

I’m not really good at segues, but here is a somewhat irrelevant quote that I just happen to like right now. Which is kind of ironic, considering I just told you that I don’t have any big goals right now. Hmm. Whatever.

big dreams

I better go and resume staring out of the window until my yard is covered with snow. Because it will happen. OMG. There’s my big dream, y’all. So the rest of you small minds can just go take a hike, because it will snow tonight.

Question 1: What is your current fitness goal?

Question 2: Is it snowing where you live?

Question 3: What’s your big dream? Seriously.

  1. Pizza is always a good idea!

Answer 1: To finish my half in March. Building up my distance after not running for a couple years has been challenging, so I just want to FINISH!
Answer 2: Not snowing now, but it’s supposed to tomorrow (I think). I love how you southerners freak about snow. It reminds me of my old Phoenician self. ;)
Answer 3: That’s a tough question. I would say my biggest dream of all is to have a happy and healthy family.

  2. That was legit the exact dinner that I ate last night! Baha But yes, I share the same goal to always be fit. I want to get as fit as I can for my wedding, no actually honeymoon, this summer, and I’d love to keep myself in prime condition so that when I finally pop out a child, I can snap back pretty easily. At least I can hope that! haha I’m sure it will never work out that way though!

  3. That pizza looks so good!

    1) My current fitness goals are to meal plan better so that I don’t get bored of eating easy throw together salads all the time + more toning exercises
    2) It is a sleet/snow combination right now. We are expected to get 6-10 inches overnight! Eek!
    3) Hmm…good question! I would have to say that my biggest dream is to accept the things that I can cannot change and accomplish all of my goals – even if I encounter roadblocks/detours along the way.

  4. 1: Gah! I have so many! The big one is probably to be able to run a 5k. I can’t even run a mile right now…yepppp I’m a tad out of shape.

Question 2: Not at the moment…BUT the windchill is -25 degrees. I’m from Rochester, NY and it’s cold cold cold. But I’ll take this over snow any day.

Question 3: Travel the world and never fall into a boring, routine lifestyle :D

  5. 1. My long term fitness goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon. My short term goal is to get stronger and healthier as a runner after coming back from an injury.

    2. We have snow 24/7 where I live so yes it is -25 degrees with wind chills currently and snowing. It’s blows. (pun intended)

    3. Wow that’s really getting deep – to find my passion and to have a healthy and happy family!

  6. We had a horrible snow today… it was completely unpredicted. The state has issued a civil crisis. There are kids stranded at schools, people stuck at work, and even more people stuck on the roads unable to get home and searching for warm shelter. I know a lot of people who abandoned their cars on the roads and walked miles home. It is totally crazy. I am so grateful my family made it home safe!

  7. I couldn’t agree more that there are always new goals to reach!
    1) Pull-ups.
    2) Nope. All the snow that’s left is just brown and gross now.
    3) My big dream is to carry out God’s will. I know, I know, that sounds vague and cheesy. But whatever He wants me to do, I hope to accomplish that. Another big dream? To hike up a big, beautiful mountain with someone I love.
Ok, that was also cheesy. Whatever, I want it to happen.

  8. I really miss those days when I got to go home early because of “snow” or those days when you would have a 2 hour delay… Or even better – SNOW DAY! ha ah! :) However, I eventually went to boarding school for SNOWBOARDING so when it snowed – SCHOOL ON!! ha ha!

And I love your mindset :) Just keep on, keeping on!

  9. 1) start working out again after having my son 6 weeks ago and run a 5K, 10K and maybe a half.

    2) I live in Minnesota so yes, it is definitely is snowing. Coldest winter in 30 years! Schools have closed 5 times this year so far!

    3) to be a SAHM!

    • I bet those 6 weeks flew by (or dragged by if you weren’t sleeping…)!! Maddux will be two this summer and I have NO idea where the time went.

  10. OH man I am all about the pizza…one of my favorite meals to eat, and that one looks delicious!

I totally agree with a lifetime of fitness being my ultimate fitness goal…I consider races, personal bests, and strength tests just ways of solidifying that ultimate goal. In my eyes, a lifetime of health and fitness is a huge, and challenging, achievement, but so worth it!

I live in Michigan, and yes it has been snowing a CRAP ton. Right now though we are dealing with the best cold weather EVER (note the sarcasm). Yesterday was about -16 with a high of 0 midday. Goooooood times!

University of Michigan, where I go, actually called off school yesterday b/c of the cold (first time they cancelled class since 1978). It was sort of a big deal here lol.

My big dream – move somewhere warm and be truly happy :)

    Have a great day!

  11. I’m currently working towards a marathon PR, but always thinking about how to make training sustainable and healthy so that I’ll always be active. It did snow a little bit, but in Massachusetts, they don’t shut things down unless it’s a blizzard :) And I’m still working out my big goals. I graduated last May, so that was a pretty big one. Everything else feels a little up in the air right now!

  12. My current goal is to to find that happy balance between pushing myself and burning out. I tend to be all or nothing which can lead to collapsing on the floor and eating cookies for a week. I am working on listening to my body and having a balanced fitness life so I can reach goals like do a pull up and run faster (my two biggest goals)

    2. We got about 2 inches this morning. No biggie for us…

    3. I would love to figure out what I want to be when I “grow up”. It would be nice to find a job I love.

  15. Totally with you on this. I used to be completely incapable of staying motivated without some race or goal to look forward to, but now I’m shocked that I can actually be comfortable with regular fitness, just for fitness’s sake.

    • I still have days where I have to remind myself that there doesn’t have to be some “plan”, but right now I’m really glad to just be working out for the sake of working out. It’s nice. :)

  16. I’m so glad I dont have to deal with any of this snow nonsense. I moved from Syracuse for a reason! I agree, I love to PR and get stronger, faster, etc. but most of all I just want to not stop.

  17. I like your goal – it’s so great to realize that even if you accomplish a big goal, like a marathon, etc, you can still aim higher and higher. And just sticking with it in the long run is an accomplishment that doesn’t necessarily come with a medal, but rewards that seep over into lots of other areas in life.

My crazy goal would be to run a trail marathon or tri – we’ll see when that happens!

  18. Current goal: run an ultra marathon (June 1)

Snowing: yup. I live in Calgary. November – March we have snow. Ugh.

Big goal: qualify for Boston. Who knows if it’ll happen, but I’m throwing it out there :)

  19. I love how our dreams, goals, and fitness aspirations fluctuate over time. Like you, I have been in that place where I just wanted to focus on fitness and healthy living. And then I’ll eventually get the itch back to do something “goal”ish. My current fitness goal is to get faster and participate in an Ironman 70.3 – my big dream is to complete in Ironman. We’ll see. :)

  20. My long term goal is to be a really active grandma. I want to go on hikes, swim, spend all day at Disney, maybe even run a few races with my grandkids someday. I want their friends to say “Wow! Your grandma does THAT?!?! That’s so cool!”

Yup. A very long term goal. My oldest is almost 14, so I don’t expect grandkids for quite a while. My shorter term goal is to turn 40 next year the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life (after running my first half this year). And since right now is probably the healthiest I’ve ever been, I feel that goal is definitely doable!
